Our Work

The first phase of the Accessible Quality Healthcare (AQH) Project focused on strengthening Primary Health Care services in Kosovo and improving access to quality healthcare, particularly for vulnerable and underserved populations. Implemented in 12 municipalities, AQH Phase I introduced innovative approaches in quality improvement, health management, community engagement, and non-communicable disease (NCD) care. The phase laid the foundation for stronger health systems by building the capacities of healthcare providers and managers while empowering citizens to better understand and demand their right to quality healthcare.

During its second phase, AQH expanded its geographical coverage from 12 to 20 municipalities across Kosovo, strengthening collaboration with municipal and national health actors. The project continued promoting people-centred and integrated Primary Health Care services, using the prevention and management of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) as an entry point for improving healthcare quality. AQH Phase II supported healthcare providers, managers, and communities in delivering and demanding higher-quality services, while contributing to stronger health systems and increased citizen participation in healthcare decision-making.

The third and final phase of the Accessible Quality Healthcare (AQH) Project builds on the achievements of the previous phases with a strong focus on sustainability, institutional ownership, and the national scale-up of successful interventions. Through an on-demand support mechanism, AQH III is open for collaboration with all 38 municipalities in Kosovo, enabling municipalities and health institutions to identify and implement interventions based on their own priorities and needs. The phase emphasizes the capitalization of project-supported interventions, increased municipal initiative, co-financing, and the gradual transfer of responsibilities to national and local institutions to ensure long-term sustainability and continued improvement of inclusive, people-centred Primary Health Care services across Kosovo. In this way, AQH aims to ensure that the knowledge, practices, and systems developed throughout the project continue to strengthen Kosovo’s healthcare system well beyond the project’s duration.
